The two speeches were part of the diverse cultural programme of the Dubai International Holy Quran Award (DIHQA) running on Ramadan 1-20, falling on May 17 – June 05.
The 22nd session of the global Quran competition, themed this year ‘Edition of Zayed’, is sponsored by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Present were H.E. Ibrahim Mohamed Bu Melha, Adviser to the Ruler of Dubai for Cultural and Humanitarian Affairs and Head of DIHQA Organising Committee, members of the organising committee, senior officials, and dignitaries.
Also present were the sponsors of the first night of the competition – the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Dubai Courts, leave alone a large audience of men and women, old and young, from all nationalities across the country.
The first lecture, delivered at the Dubai Chamber by popular Saudi scholar Sheikh Saleh Al Moghamsy was on the diverse meanings of the word ‘Al Waridoon’, while the second lecture given by Dr. Sheikh Saeed bin Mesfir Al Gahtani at the Dubai Women’s Association in Al Hamriya area was on ‘Self-judgment’.
In the first lecture Sheikh Al Moghamsy explained the different meanings of the word ‘Waridoon’ that has been frequently mentioned in the holy Quran, prophetic Sunnah, and Arabic poetry.
“One of these is when Almighty Allah talked about the Pharaoh who led his people to fire after rejecting the message of His Prophet Moses (PBUH), and torturing his followers.”
It also meant those who seek water, he added. “This was the case in the story of Yusuf whose brothers dropped deep down a water well to get rid of him,” he added.
“It was until some Bedouin passersby let down their bucket in the well to get some water to quench their thirst when they found Prophet Yusuf (PBUH) lying in the bucket.”
In his lecture, Dr. Sheikh Saeed bin Mesfir advised the women audience to watch out their deeds and judge themselves before being judged. The popular Saudi scholar then answered some of the attendees’ questions.
Hamad Thani, director of communication and marketing at Dubai Courts, said they are honoured to co-sponsor the first night of the competition which is named after the late sheikh Zayed this year.
“The Dubai International Holy Quran Award is one of the major Quran competitions worldwide that has remarkably developed the cultural awareness of the public through an array of activities.”
It is so amazing to know that up to 104 contestants from around the globe are to chip in the 22nd edition of the competition this year, he added. “We wish the organising committee and memorisers all the best.”
Ibrahim Mohamed Bu Melha, Adviser to the Ruler of Dubai for Cultural and Humanitarian Affairs and Head of DIHQA Organising Committee, later honoured Sheikh Saleh Al Moghamsy, and the sponsors of the event. Cash and in-kind gifts were then presented to the audience based on a raffle draw.
